Nebraska - Online Notary Registration

How to Become an Online Notary in Nebraska



As of July 1, 2020, Nebraska Notaries have been able to register to perform remote online notarizations (RONs). If you want to become a remote online Notary in NE, follow the steps below.

Have an existing commission as a traditional Notary Public.
Complete the state-required RON training.
Take the Nebraska Online Notary Public Exam.
Sign up and contract with a RON technology provider
Complete your Online Notary Registration Form and submit it to the Secretary of State together with your Online Notary Public Exam.
Pay the states $100 registration fee.
Wait to receive an email from the SOS with your online Notary commission certificate.
Get your eSeal and Digital Certificate

Once you’re authorized to perform RON in Nebraska and approved and familiar with your platform, you can start performing Remote Online Notarizations. Be sure to stay up to date as Online Notarization laws are changing quickly!

What are the requirements to become a Notary in Nebraska?



In order to become a Notary in Nebraska, you must meet the following requirements:

Nebraska Notaries must be at least 18 years old
.Nebraska Notaries must be a US citizen or permanent resident.
Nebraska Notaries must live and/or work in Nebraska.
Nebraska Notaries must pass an examination administered by the Secretary of State.
Nebraska Notaries must purchase a $15,000 surety bond prior to becoming commissioned Nebraska Notaries

How to Become a Traditional Notary in Nebraska (Get your Notary Commission)



To become an Nebraska Notary Public, you need to complete the following:

Assure you meet all of your state’s qualifications (below).
Request a written take-home test from the Secretary of State.
Take the written exam once you receive it.
Once you pass the Nebraska State Online Notary Test, complete the Initial Application for Notary Commission and get it notarized.
Buy a $15,000 surety bond.
Submit your application, proof of your surety bond, $30 commission fee and a U.S. Citizenship Attestation Form to the Notary Division of the Secretary of State’s office in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The Secretary of State will issue your Notary commission certificate by mail.
Take your commission certificate to a vendor to get your ink stamp seal.
Obtain a Notary journal
Get E&O insurance (optional, but strongly recommended).

Once you have your bond, seal, journal and commission you are ready to start performing notarial acts as a commissioned notary in Nebraska.
