How to Become an Online Notary in Montana
As of Oct 1, 2019, Montana Notaries have been able to register to perform remote online notarizations (RONs). If you want to become a remote online Notary in MT, follow the steps below.
Have an existing commission as a traditional Notary Public.
Contract and sign up with at least one state-approved RON technology provider.
Complete the Montana state-required training course and exam.
Submit your Notary Public Information Update and course and exam completion proof through the online portal.
Once you’re authorized to perform RON in Montana and approved and familiar with your platform, you can start performing Remote Online Notarizations. Be sure to stay up to date as Online Notarization laws are changing quickly!

What are the requirements to become a Notary in Montana?
In order to become a Notary in Montana, you must meet the following requirements:
Be a resident of Montana or employed by an employer in the state of Montana.
Be 18 years or older and have a valid government-issued photo ID.
Complete four hours of Notary training approved by the Secretary of State or commission for continuing legal education.
A certificate of completion will be available to download after each course.
Take and pass the Montana Notary Exam online.
An exam certificate will be available to download.
Have a $25,000 surety bond with your name and signature on it.
Make sure your name, and signature are an exact match.
Not have any felonies based in dishonesty or deceit.
How to Become a Traditional Notary in Montana (Get your Notary Commission)
To become a Notary Public in Montana, you need to complete the following:
Make sure you meet all of your state’s requirements (see below).
Complete four hours of Notary training approved by the Montana Secretary of State. You will get a certificate of completion that is available to download after each course.
Take and pass the Montana Notary Exam online. An exam certificate will be available to download.
Obtain a $25,000 surety bond.
Take your bond form to a Notary to administer your oath of office and notarize your signature. Make sure your name and signature on the bond and application are an exact match.
Complete your Montana Notary Public Online Application through the Secretary of State’s Online Notary Portal.
You’ll need to upload your training certificates of completion, exam certificate and notarized surety bond form with your oath of office as well as payment for the non-refundable $25 filing fee.
Receive approval via email and download your commission certificate online.
Obtain your Notary seal and journal (make sure your seal name matches your commission)
Once you have your bond, seal, journal and commission you are ready to start performing notarial acts as a commissioned notary in Montana.
